Engagement Story - 9/13/07

So Friday I had two homework assignments due...

On Tuesday, I went to lunch with her dad and did the "ask permission" thing. I wasnt really nervous - ok maybe a little - and he said he had been expecting it but didnt know when. He was happy for me/us, and "gave his blessing". We then chatted about school (not getting married until I graduate), his proposal to his wife, the ring.. etc. Nothing major. I swore him to secrecy - and asked that if he told Katie's mom, she had to keep it quiet so it would remain a surprise.

Now a little background - I have had the ring for a while now. In fact, we have had a few talks about marriage that she has brought up, and every time I put her off. Most of the time, the ring has been right beside her in the console of my car. I have gotten many a chuckle because of that. Last week, I bought an iPhone, the coolest device known to man. I had been telling her we were going to celebrate the anniversary on Friday because I spent so much money on the iPhone and Friday is payday...

So, Thursday morning rolled around and I told her she needed to be ready to go by 5:30 - and gave her an idea of what to wear. She was confused. I bought her an anniversary present (heart pendant from James Avery and chain/rope). So at 5:30ish, I went to pick her up and I took her three roses and a card. (One red, one pink, one white - for you girls reading.) I have never gotten her roses before. We went to Square One, and sat at the same table as our first date. It was there I gave her the anniversary present. From there, we went to the MSC to walk through the art galleries (which we did on our first date). After that, we started walking around campus.

A little history: On our first date, she didnt know much about A&M. So we walked around campus and talked about traditions and the special places. During that walk, we went to century tree for the first time.

This time, we started to walk around. After a while, she started getting tired and wanted to sit down. We were near century tree so we went there to sit down. Once there, I told her how great the last year has been, how she makes me a better person, and that I loved her. We chatted a while, then she gave a little speech about how she loved me and that I was her best friend. I told her she was my best friend and then she started tearing up, because I had never said that and she didnt expect to hear that from me. At this point I was getting a little nervous - ok a lot nervous. I said there is something else you didnt expect... got up, got the ring box out, kneeled down and asked her to marry me.

She started crying and I think she was hyperventilating. Eventually I made her answer me, then she started crying and shaking and stuff... She was really happy, then she got really excited. We took a few pictures ourselves, then we had a passerby take a picture of us and he congratulated us. At this point she had calmed down some, and she was really excited. She was like "BAM - Look at this rock!" or "BAM - Who just got engaged?!" - and throwing her hand out. And of course she was flashing everyone her ring and hand as we were walking back to the car.

She called her parents in the car and conned them into coming up from Navasota. She then proceeded to call half the world. I needed to work on some homework, but I was on standby as she was calling people and her parents were there.

So, I got engaged and I didnt get to do my homework.
